LAKE EEIE. O, tell usi, placid waters, That stretch away, away, Tell us the mighty secrets Thy bosom holds for aye ; Thou who art old, we pray thee. Tell us the wondrous truth — Thou who dost keep through ages The dimples and smiles of youth. Thou who hast lain unchanging A thousand cycles past, Watching tlie march of nations Each greater than the last ; Nations whose names have perished, Buried centuries deep, And far within thy bosom Their records thou dost keep. O, tell us, cruel waters With Heaven's tints abloom. How many brave and noble Have found in thee a tomb? How many tears of sorrow Have swelled thy gleaming waves? How many hearts have broken For those within thy graves? 1 SOJ^GS OF THE LAKES No word, O, sullen waters, Thy gloomy depths will speak; Thou yieldest not thy knowledge. Though that be all we seek ; For if our eyes could search thee And read thy hidden lore, The books of all the ages Could never teach us more. But know, O, silent waters, There cometh fast a day In which thy darkest billows Shall all be swept away ; When from thy deepest caverns The nameless dead shall rise. And all the tales of all the years Lie clear beneath tb^ skies. SONG OF THE LAKES. Oh the charm of the dancing waters, The rose of the summer morn. The opal and pearl of the sunsets Which pass when the night is born! I love and I sing of thy glories. Ye beautiful inland lakes. Whether peace reigneth o'er you Or whether the tempest breaks. Away from the din of cities, Out where the breezes blow. Heaven undimmed above you. Paths unsullied below. SOJVGS OF THE LAKES Here's balm for the heart that's breaking, Here's for the toiler rest. Here's ease for the brow that's aching, Peace for the care-opprest. Oh student, turn from your pages; Here is the scroll of truth ; The science and art of Nature Down from the old Earth ^s youth. Here's poetry grand in rhythm, Tales for the World to read, Beligion pure from the Maker, Nobler than man-built creed. Come out on the welcoming waters ; 'Twill teach you content once more : Earth's follies and vanities vanish As fadeth the line of the shore. X
