It is distant southwest from Newport\\nabout thirty miles, and north of east from Montauk, the\\neasterly end of Long Island, about eighteen miles.\\nIt was first described in the year 1524 by the French\\nnavigator, Verrazzano. In 16 14 it was visited by Block,\\nwho gave it its present name. In 1636 the Boston trader,\\nJohn Oldham, while at anchor in its harbor, was killed by\\nthe Indians. Colonel John Endicott was soon afterwards\\nsent by the General Court of Massachusetts to punish the\\noffenders. He landed upon the Island and thoroughly\\naccomplished his object. In 1658 the Island was granted\\nto Gov.
