Most of these\\nare clothed to their tops with thick forests, but some\\nhave prairie-like summits covered with deep turf. A\\nbranch U, S. mint was established at Charlotte in 1838,\\nand has since 1873 been continued as an assay office.\\nSilver occurs associated with lead in Clay and David-\\nson counties, and zinc in the latter county. Iron is\\nwidely disseminated in the form of specular ores,\\nhematites and magnetites; copper and plumbago also\\nare found in many counties. It has about 3000 miles\\nof railway. The chief port and largest city is Wil-\\nmington, the capital Raleigh. Parts of the state are\\ndeficient in good schools, but there are excellent\\ngraded schools in the principal towns. Besides several\\ndenominational colleges, there is a state university\\n(1795) at Chapel Hill, and a state agricultural college\\nwas established at Raleigh in 1889. There are asylums\\nfor the insane at Goldsboro, Raleigh, and Morganton\\nthe first for negroes only and provision is also\\nmade by the state for the blind and deaf-mutes, both\\nwhite and black. By\\nthe English it was called both Carolana and Carolina.\\nIn 1653 a colony from Virginia settled on the banks of\\nthe Roanoke and Chowan rivers this was the first\\npermanent settlement in North Carolina. The proprietors, to avoid erecting a\\nnumerous democracy in Carolina, adopted a Utopian\\nform of fundamental constitutions, prepared by John\\nLocke and Shaftesbury, which recognised a nobility\\nof landgraves and cassiques. The eldest proprietor\\nwas palatine, and the other seven had high-sounding\\ntitles. The proprietary rule ceased in 1729, when the\\nking bought out the claims of the proprietors for\\n;^2500 each, and North Carolina became a royal prov-\\nince. Under the administration of the second royal\\ngovernor, Gabriel Johnston (1734-53), the colony in-\\ncreased in population from 14,000 to 45,000 and be-\\ncame very prosperous. The arbitrary rule of Gov-\\nernor Dobbs (1754-66) and Governor Tryon (1766-73)\\nserved to intensify the dislike of the people to the\\ntaxation policy of parliament and when the colonial\\nassembly at Wilmington protested against taxation\\nwithout representation it was dissolved by Governor\\nTryon.
